What We've Been Up To

We met our new nephew, Teddy Bollard, who was born while we were on our trip. Ben & Heidi flew down to hear Sam give his Mission Homecoming talk on Sunday. Teddy gives us hope that a blond gene could prevail against the dominant Bollard brunette. Good job Ben & Heidi, he is beautiful! Bollard Boys Reunite: This is the first picture of all five brothers together in 2 1/2 years. Nothing changes--they still poked, punched, and pinched each other all through this photo shoot. And the video games (particularly guitar hero) are in full swing. Although we have no hope of ever tipping the scales of this male-heavy family, here are the three daughter-in-laws together with the four grandsons. I am so grateful to Heidi & Tori who have added some female company into the family for Christy & I (not to mention more people to chat with while the video games rage on).I said goodbye to my beloved Gilmore Girls by watching the Series Finale last week. My cousin recently told me that she read of a study that found people can feel as strong a depth of emotion for a TV character as a real-life loved one. While I am definitely not that far gone, I will be in mourning on Tuesday nights for awhile. Thanks to Kelli, who analyzed the last two episodes with me. And, thank goodness for the return of The Office in the Fall to keep me entertained.
We spent Memorial Day in San Diego. My boys lived it up in my parent's backyard and at my Aunt Becky's pool. It was great to be outside in the sunshine for almost the entire day. I'm SO ready for a Summertime of pool and beach days. Yesterday I turned 27. Pink Roses, great food, and a night out- just me and my husband. What more can a girl ask for?

Look Ma, No Hands!

It doesn't make spaghetti any less messy, but at least they both attempt to use silverware on a regular basis now. Here they are lapping up the noodles at Grandma's house last week:

Bollard Family European Adventure

Ever since Will's brother Sam received his mission call to Barcelona, Spain 2 1/2 years ago we've been excited about the possibility of traveling there to pick him up. Now that we're home from our 13 day European adventure, I can definitely say the trip exceeded all of our expectations. We had a wonderful, busy trip full of sightseeing (as you can tell from the slide show), and some nice family bonding time too. We concentrated most of our time in Spain, seeing both the large, exciting cities of Barcelona & Madrid, and the more relaxed Southern parts with their beautiful beaches. We loved reuniting with Sam, having a family testimony meeting with his Mission President and just being out in the perfect weather. We weren't big fans of most of the Spanish food we tried and by the end of the week McDonald's was sounding fantastic! After a week in Spain, we flew to London for four more days of sightseeing. This felt like a sort of homecoming for me, as I have dreamed of showing Will this city ever since I studied abroad there seven years ago. Despite the pouring rain, I feel like we were able to hit the highlights and even do a few things that were new to me, like going up in the London Eye--a huge glass Ferris wheel with amazing views of the entire city.

And, of course, this post wouldn't be complete without some much deserved thank-you's to my wonderful in-laws, Bill & Christy, for making this trip and all it's memories possible for us, and to my own parents, for being so good to our boys while we were away and allowing us a much-needed break. We love you all!

The Random, Funny & Just Plain Weird . . .

As with any family trip, there were plenty of memorable moments that will keep us laughing (and wondering) for years to come. Here's just a small sampling:
  • Unload Your Weapons
Will, Charlie & I spent a day and a half in New York before the rest of the crew met up with us to fly to Madrid. Knowing we would spend our full day in NY exploring Manhattan, we decided to stay close to our hotel on Friday night, near the JFK airport. We asked the hotel desk where we could find a restaurant to eat in and that's how we ended up being dropped off at the Green Acres Mall by our taxi driver. Let me give you a visual picture of this Mall: only half the lettering of the Macy's neon is lit up and the display windows are boarded with plywood, crumbled piles of gravel lay where there should have been sidewalks, chain link fences enclose all buildings not directly inside of the Mall, tons of really young looking kids wearing gold chains around their necks are wandering around unattended, and the only place we felt safe eating in is an Applebee's. Still feeling brave, we decide to try and see a movie. The theater is so packed with kids (again, no parents in sight) that we can hardly get in the door. Then we realize that we're standing in a massive line to get through metal detectors and that large signs are posted everywhere stating that all guns, knifes, and metal objects must be left behind. Yep, we watched TV in our hotel room behind the bolted door instead.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge!
It was fun to show Charlie New York for the first time. He had also never been on a Subway system either. When we approached the grimy, graffiti-covered above ground Queens train station that would connect us downtown Charlie looked up in awe and exclaimed, "Wow, the Brooklyn Bridge!" If only we were all so easily impressed!
  • Third Times The Charm
We flew Iberia airlines to Spain, which Will's parents have flown on twice before. BOTH times Iberia had lost their luggage, leaving us to hope that there was no way such bad luck could continue. One by one everyone in our group of eight got all of their luggage--except for Bill & Christy. Iberia seriously has it out for these two!
  • Flip Flops, A Baby Bjorn & the Subway Station = A Dangerous Combo
Baby Max was the most well-behaved four month-old traveling baby I've ever seen or heard of in my life. He caused about as much inconvenience for the group as bringing along a Cabbage Patch Doll would have--it was amazing--even sleeping through the night despite an eight hour time difference! However well-behaved though, it's still hard to see your feet when you have Max strapped to your chest in a Baby Bjorn. This is how Tori got munched by a subway gate her first ride of the trip, resulting in the loss of half of her toenail. She was understandably wary of the subway gates for the rest of the trip.
  • Are We There Yet?
We're still not sure how that four hour drive from Barcelona to Alicante turned into eight hours, but at least we got to see some amazing castles throughout the countryside (plus Tori and I had the awesome combination of cheddar cheese Pringles, Hot Tamales, and tropical fruit flavored Trident to sustain us). Despite getting lost a lot, by the end of the trip Will proved his skills as master map reader despite the crazy roundabouts, one-ways streets, and driving on the right-hand side in London.
  • L'espluga di Francoli - Try saying that ten times fast!
The unusual name of this Spanish city caught our attention on the road signs and we had a fun time saying "L'Espluga" in all different kinds of accents and voices. From there the word became our favorite all-purpose noun, as in "What's that in your paella?" "I don't know, maybe a L'ESPLOOOOGA!"
  • Christy Desecrates Holy Water
We saw a lot of Catholic Monasteries in Spain, few with active priests anywhere in sight. This wasn't the case when Christy decided to stick her hand in the holy water and start flicking it at us. While she got a heated berating in Spanish from the resident Father, we quickly tried to make our exit.
  • Horny Devil Mishap
When we got to our condo in Alicante it quickly became obvious from the decorating that the owners were "of the other persuasion," ie- male Roman warrior plaster busts, red silk curtians framing the hallway arch, and these lovely plaster figurines of the Horny Devil & Super Stud. When Bill attempted to point out these beauties to us he accidentally knocked the Horny Devil onto the Spanish Tile floor, shattering it into pieces. One tube of superglue later, the Horny Devil was almost as good as new.
  • Sam Detained As A Security Threat!
Sam had to fly separately from the group from Madrid to London. London has a very through security screening process and apparently a young man with a one-way ticket to London, no employment, and no money, and a story about being a missionary for two years is suspicious enough to detain. It didn't help that Sam didn't know either of his parents cell phone numbers either (again, the "story" about being away for 2 years!). Finally we heard "Will the parents of Samuel Jordan Bollard please approach the security desk" over the PA system and things got straightened out!
  • Maybe It's a Wig?!
Our flat in London had some "unique" features, but Tori was lucky enough to discover the most unique of them all. Noticing something sticking out from under her bed, she reached down to pull it out, believing it was something she had dropped. Instead Tori found an entire grocery bag stuffed full of dark brown hair . . . . EW!!! Luckily this was the day before we left so we didn't have time to make any more discoveries. Somehow I don't think this was a "locks for love" project, but we can hope.
  • We Miss Our Flight!
It really wouldn't be a Bollard family trip if there wasn't at least some threat of missing, or actually missing a flight. On the last day of the trip we missed our flight out of London by three minutes due to some misinformation given to us by an airline employee who convinced us that it would be quicker for us to take the airport subway system over to our correct terminal, rather than drive our rental cars over. So, while Joe & Bill returned our rental cars, the rest of us (baby Max in tow) hauled all 14 pieces of luggage through a huge subway station and airport. Once we realized it was taking too long we started to run, practically re-creating the scene from Home Alone. We seriously must have looked half-crazed! The only silver lining of missing our flight (because it was costly and frustrating to fix): we ended up on a direct flight that got us home three hours earlier than previously scheduled!

We're Back!

When my jet-lagged brain resurfaces I'll write the epic travel report, but here's just a quick post to say we've returned safe and sound from our trip. We've reunited with our boys, who are both happy, and a bit confused, to see us again (tonight as I put Luke to bed he sleepily said, "Goodnight Grandma-Mommy"). We had a fabulous time! Not only was it great to see Elder Sam Bollard again, but it was a once in a life time chance for Will & I to spend two straight weeks together exploring some amazing parts of the world.

Also, we want to announce the arrival of Ben & Heidi's baby (and our second nephew/cousin), Theodore "Teddy" Franklin Bollard! Heidi went into labor two weeks early and delivered Teddy on May 7th, the same day we reunited with Sam at the mission home. It was an fun experience to have the whole family connected via cell phone checking in on Heidi at the Orem hospital. Congratulations Ben & Heidi, we can't wait to meet him!

Ode to the Writers

My sister Danielle, a second grade teacher, just sent me a list of the "50 teacher picked all time best children's books." Reading over the titles just made me smile, it was like remembering old friends. I am generally a very uncreative person--most of the time I see the world in a straightforward way, have fairly normal dreams, color inside the lines, and think inside of the box. Anything creative I do is in some form copied from someone else. But, I'm so glad the world is made up those who have really vivid imaginations and can share their stories with the rest of us. I think a quality children's book is one of the most difficult things to write because you have so few words to work with. A child's attention span is only so long. And yet a few simple phrases can teach them so much--and just make them laugh (or make me laugh at something my kids don't quite understand yet!). So this is why, thanks to the deeply discounted Scholastic book order forms Danielle passes along to me, I will continue to create a home library for my kids. If my gene pool didn't give them any creativity, at least I will have not failed in exposing them to some of the greatness out there. And, it's just fun to watch some of my favorites become their favorites (although I could do without Ethan's attachment to books on trucks).

If anyone wants the list e-mailed to them just let me know.

WICKED

Last night we went to see the musical Wicked at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. What a great time! This one exceeded all of my expectations. Not really knowing much about the show, other than a few songs from the score I'd listened to yesterday morning, I was surprised to find out how clever the story is and how memorable some of the songs are once you see them in context. Plus, it was just plain FUNNY! Thank you Bill & Christy for letting us tag along with you.
