I don't know how the rest of you spent your summer vacations, but many days of mine were spent watching musicals at my cousin Katie's house. While I can't claim Kate's undying love for some of them (I could do without Oaklahoma), we both never tired of watching The Sound of Music. So, when my book club selected The Story of the Trapp Family Singers last month, I was anxious to uncover the real version told in a first person account by the almost-nun, Maria. While there were some disappointing differences between the book and the musical, what emerged was a story far more interesting and meaningful. I was fascinated to learn about the Trapp Family's eventual escape to America and see the immigration process into our country and culture through their eyes. But, most impressive was Maria's unwavering faith in following the Will of God in her life, through every seemingly impossible challenge that this presented. This woman's strength, and her ability to see humor in the most unlikely situations, was inspiring. And, as an added bonus, you get to see pictures of all of the family members and the original Villa Trapp (although, I still couldn't shake the image of Julie Andrews with the horrible haircut the whole time I was reading!).Tell me what some of your current reads are! I have a long plane ride in May and am hosting my book club in June, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I haven't done much reading lately but here are some good ones that I've read in the past couple of years and I'm still sticking to the same list I always give out:
-The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: this book will change your life
-Peace Like a River by Leif Enger: so so good
-Bel Canto by Ann Patchett: a great read
-Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts: might be a too gritty for you but it's so so interesting
-The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver: pretty good
-The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver: pretty good
-The Red Tent by Anita Diamant: pretty good for a historical (Biblical) fiction
-Secret Life of Bees by Sue Kidd Monk: really good
And that's all for now.
ok i lied.
Random Family by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc: a sociological study that reads much like a novel. It will blow your mind.
Interesting, I have to host book club in April or May, maybe I'll pick this! I too am a huge fan of the musical, I used to watch it every day when I was little.
Thanks for the book suggestion. I am always looking for a new read.
I just finished Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund. It's a fictional personal narrative of Marie Antionette. Very good.
And The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. Great read and excellent book group discussion.
Also, one of my favorite books is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Finally read it and loved it!
Miss you guys! Have a great trip!
MIchelle
